Announcing: Beyond Apologetics Symposium
What resources are available on pastoral theology, care and counseling for transgendered, bisexual, lesbian and gay individuals, their families and their communities? Currently, literature of pastoral theology, care, and counseling offers adequate resources for scholars and practitioners to respond to questions about the nature of biblical texts related to LGBT persons. There is also some good basic material about pastoral care with this population.
But that’s not enough. What’s needed now are pastoral practices that go beyond the normal “apologetics” for pastoral care within the LGBT community that debate the appropriateness of LGBT being or identity. What’s needed is for the next generation of thought to develop more integrative and pro-active theological stances and practices within the field of pastoral theology, care, and counseling.
Beyond Apologetics: Sexual Identity, Pastoral Theology and Pastoral Practice, seeks to bridge the gap between pastoral theology, care and counseling, and gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered theology and theory, and provide a richer understanding of how this theory and theology might advance practices of care. This collaborative symposium brings together Phillips Theological Seminary and Brite Divinity School, along with LGBT organizations and faith communities, to begin the work of initiating conversations and public dialogue between scholars and practitioners of pastoral theology, care and counseling, as well as those looking to move beyond the usual “apologetics” for pastoral practices. It also seeks to begin constructing pro-active pastoral care texts and models of education for seminaries, local congregations and pastoral care specialists.
